Shares primer·6 short cards

What a CFD on stock is

A share CFD mirrors the price of the underlying equity without conveying ownership. You profit from price moves; you don't get voting rights, and dividends are passed through as cash adjustments.

Earnings risk

Single-name shares can gap on earnings releases. Position sizes that look safe in normal vol can be unsurvivable in a 10% overnight move.

Dividend adjustments

On ex-dividend dates, long CFD holders receive a cash credit equal to the net dividend; short holders pay the same. The share price drops by the dividend amount on the open.

Sector correlations

Stocks in the same sector move together more than across sectors. A surprise in one mega-cap often leads the rest of the cluster — useful for sizing and hedging.

Cash session vs after-hours

Most CFDs trade in the home session window only (6.5h US, 8h EU, 6h Asia). Outside that window, the order book thins and the spread widens.

Corporate actions

Splits, spin-offs, mergers, and special dividends are reflected in CFD price and position size. We adjust on the ex-date; never on the announcement date.

FAQ·4 questions

  • How much leverage do share CFDs get?

Retail share CFDs are commonly capped at 1:5. That still multiplies exposure five-fold — the calculators show the margin a position actually consumes before you place it.

  • When can I trade share CFDs?

During the underlying exchange's cash session — roughly 6.5 hours for US names (14:30–21:00 UTC in winter). Quotes freeze outside those hours; pending orders queue for the open.

  • What happens on dividend day?

Long CFD positions are credited the dividend equivalent and shorts are debited, on the ex-date, itemised on your statement. The share price's ex-dividend drop nets against the adjustment.

  • What's the minimum position?

Share CFDs trade from a fraction of one share, so you can hold a few hundred dollars of a four-figure stock. Exact minimums per name are shown in the platform.

Costs

Three costs, all on the table

Everything you pay to hold a share CFD — quoted live on Apple, our reference name.

Reference · AAPL

  • Spread0.1–0.2 USD

Exchange price plus a published markup — the all-in difference is what you see on the ticket.

  • Overnight financingBenchmark ± markup

Long positions pay a daily financing rate; shorts may also carry a borrow cost on hard-to-borrow names. Both are itemised on your statement.

  • CommissionSpread-only

No separate commission on standard accounts — the markup is the cost. Raw accounts price commission per side, entity-specific.
